How Has Social Media Made Us Unsocial?

How Has Social Media Made Us Unsocial?

Charlotte J. Moore February 11, 2019 Tech No Comments

In the world we live in today, social media seems to have taken over every aspect of our lives. Everywhere you look someone is on their phone calling, texting, or browsing. Social media is a good thing. It has made life better and more convenient in more ways than one.

However, just like everything else, there are two sides to it. While social media has helped you to network and create meaningful relationships whether in your personal life or business, it has also left you more isolated. Some may disagree with this point. You don’t have time to have a face-to-face conversation with your family or friends. You can use FireStrike to save time and get off social media.

With social media apps increasing each passing day, more and more people are turning to them keeping them apart from the people who love them the most. Someone who has one social media account will be more socially engaged with his or her friends than someone who has more than three social media accounts. You‘re so eager to know what has happened to someone on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. that we don’t even realize what is happening to the people right next to you.

There is no physical interaction

You might think you’re more social that you’ve ever been because you have many followers on your Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram accounts. You can even get automatic instagram likes to earn yourself more people to your accounts, according to TheSmallBusinessBlog. This doesn’t mean you’re social, it only shows that you have friends from an unreal world. Being social means you’re physically present and being in the moment.

Studies have shown that most of the people who spend most of their time on social media platforms don’t have any real friends they can talk to. It’s very easy for someone to set up a fake identity on any social media site and mislead you into believing they’re someone they’re not. If you aren’t careful you can give out sensitive and private information that your ‘friend’ might use to hurt you with it.

Takes time away from what is really important

Social media has so many sites that are addictive like porn sites and gaming sites that have lured so many people to believe that they’re not hurting anyone. When the truth is you’re missing out on connecting with your family and friends and missing out on the important moments of their lives.

We have become zombies passing through life without a care in the world

If you walk across the street right now the majority of the people will be on their phones not even caring about what is happening around them. Young people are so busy texting while walking they don’t have time to look up where they’re going. This has led to people getting hurt or worse just because they couldn’t miss something that was posted on Facebook.

You have become so dependent on technology and social media that you become lost without it.
Your phone is your reminder about almost every little detail of your life. You depend on your phone to remind you of your kid’s birthdays, lunch with your husband, a date with a friend, the important things in your life. You have let technology do all the remembering for you and when you can’t remember you blame technology. During the olden days, people didn’t have the technology and they remembered everything. Your life is running on autopilot and you don’t even realize it.

There are so many health issues that are arising from social media addiction

According to research, people in this generation are spending 4 years starring at their phone screens as life passes them by and it’s causing many physical and mental health issues. Being addicted to your phone can cause you to have anxiety issues, depression, and other health problems. The gaming sites that young millennial visit can be very addictive. They can spend days playing on a gaming site instead of going out and having fun with their friends. This has led to some of them developing cognitive growth problems and depression.

People don’t know how to properly communicate with each other anymore

It used to be fun going out with your friends and just enjoying each other’s company, going for picnics, a walk in the park, camping, etc. People rarely do that anymore. It has become hard to know how to communicate or even talk to each other. You would rather go on social media sites to connect with someone else than the person seated next to you. Coffee shops and cafes used to be favourite meeting places to talk over a cup of coffee and catch up with friends but not anymore.

Your life is no longer private

It’s posted on social media pages for the whole world to see. Every little detail that happens in your life is posted on your profile for everyone to see and criticize. You want to be noticed and liked by people you don’t even know. You post even sensitive and confidential information on your profile that can be easily used by people to hurt you. You live your life in the social media limelight forgetting that your life should remain private for a reason. People are now making lots of money turning their private lives into a live show, even things that are inappropriate.

Cyberbullying has been on the rise because of social media and technology.

There are no guidelines given to young social media users which make them an easy target of social media bullies who don’t know how to express themselves. Social media users are finding it hard to express themselves so they become aggressive to others with threats, harassment, and abusive language.

Conclusion

Social media has changed our lives for the better but misusing it has made it a necessary evil that you have to limit its control over your life. You have to realize where to draw the line when it comes to using social media and technology. Having a balance in your life is important so that you don’t get sucked up into the social media vortex.
